I know that maximum runners are 20 but what happens if no one drops out and and additional runners are added, would there be a ballot which could mean the favourites drop out?
Answer: Horses are permitted an entry to the Epsom Derby as late as the Monday of Derby week, known as a Supplementary Entry.
This year, the Irish trainer Aidan O'Brien, is considering allowing his Irish Derby winner, Santiago, to take his chance, at a cost of £85,000.
It isn't until 48 hours before the race itself that the final declarations are made.
As you say, the maximum number of runners is limited to 20, so if there are any more than this at the final stage, those with the lowest official ratings (OR) will be eliminated.
