Family run equestrian racing yard Girsonfield Stud & Racing: Excellence in Equestrian Training
Established in 1999, Girsonfield Stud & Racing is a family-operated facility in the North-East, offering state-of-the-art training for both National Hunt and Flat horses. Founded by Susan and Frank Corbett, Girsonfield has evolved from an affordable thoroughbred stud farm for Northern breeders into a competitive racing yard.
Our Philosophy
At Girsonfield, we maintain a family-oriented yet professional approach, striving to unlock the full potential of every horse in our care. We prioritize client involvement through regular communication, yard visits, and social gatherings.
- Velasco's victory at Musselburgh, outpacing Champ Royal in the 3-mile hurdle final
- Northern Racing Club's Champ Royal: four wins and a 2nd place in the Go North Series
- Beaumesnil's 3rd place finish in the two-mile Sea Pigeon final
- Blame Rose's impressive 5th place in the mares' final, despite being 14lb out of the weights
Season Highlights

This was a Mares' Novices' Hurdle (Listed Race) (GBB Race)(Class 1) (5yo+) (3m84yds) 3m½f on Soft over 11 hurdles.
Our first Listed race and first time out for new owners Stuart Oliver and Steve Bromley. Ridden by Edward Austin.
First week in October 2024
The week of the cake! Much cake was consumed this week by the staff thanks to gifts of a birthday cake from Codey's Landlady and Helen – super cook bringing her usual cup cakes when visiting Kingston Rock.
Sadly it was not the week of rain and Hexham went from 'easy side of good' to good to firm on decs day. So we pulled out 3/5 horses to wait for softer ground. Buddy blew up on the hill and maybe needed the race while Jimli went very well to be 2nd over a shorter distance – a learning curve learnt! 3 miles on a flat course in future. 2 x 1st and a 2nd is still not too bad out of 3 runs!
Infinite Honour heads for the sales at Doncaster on the 22/23 – with a reserve of course!
Race planning resumes with an eye on the rain. So today we have the Wheelchair Challenge at Kelso at 11.30, following the auctioning off of the teams last night at the Dinner – see below. Anne and Phillip kindly bought our team of Nathan and Josh for £300.00 – nearly 10k was raised on the night and the stories from Kim Bailey were very good – I recommend it if it happens again next year!
Kilmore Rock at Kelso – his first run following his win for us on his debut at Hexham. This may be a tougher race but we hope he will make a good account – and, at last, Samwise makes his debut in the 2.40pm Novice hurdle over 2 miles. He has had an injury and myself and Samantha have given him all the time he needed as we think he is special – fingers crossed all goes well today. Best of luck to Ron, Andy, Sheila and Mike with Kilmore and Samantha with Samwise!
Dates
Today at Kelso:-
11.30 Wheel Chair Challenger then....
Kilmore Rock and Samwise
12th Hexham – ground dependant - Kingston Rock, Rock Steady Eddie, Sunset Hill, Velasco, Champ, Pinot ( yes two will have to walk! )
14th Musselburgh will be Rogers Dream.
Fingers crossed
Susan
Second week in July 2024
A much improved run from Apache Angel set off the week but we still have a way to go with him so heading for his next race. The rest of the week we mainly spent spring cleaning and breaking in young horses. 'Paco' a 2 year old by Outstrip has been a delight and is now trotting around the arena.
The two Nelson Racing Fillies By Frontiersman and Schiaparelli, out of our winning mare Ebony Rose, have started their education – lunging and long reining. Monday we will ( that's Jamie ) starts the last one to break in this summer - the just arrived 'Dolly' out of Dolly Hall ( rated 116 )by Champion Stayer in France Ice Breeze. From the same stud in Ireland as Pinot Rouge – she is for sale to stay on the yard.
New boy Jimlis Island joins the Girsonfield Racing Club and the staff love him. He has a huge length of stride and is a lovely big horse. His stable mate, from the same yard, has her break. She is See a Stride, was sold for 47K after winning a ptp – had an injury and now we have her. I have two young members of staff on the yard determined to be Jockeys so she may turn into their teacher!
Foals had a bad week – vaccinations and feet trimmed! I am starting a small breeding syndicate for Bahrikate whose 3 year old will be in work soon. It will include Bahrikate and her filly foal by Kingston Hill – it will be a four year plan – please ask for details – 2 people needed...
We are lucky enough to have World Renowned Equine artist Jay Boyd Kirkman coming to the yard to practice his techniques – he is simply amazing – he did the pastel of Samwise in less that 2 hours – he does commissions!
So count down now to bringing the horses back in from the fields to start their training. We will be training 30 horses and I look forward to showing off our horses for the season at our Open day....4th August at 2pm....no racing this week... it was good to see the yard at the top of the Hexham league – lets hope we stay there over the next 5 meetings!
First week in July 2024
A great start to the week with a 2nd, 1st and a 6th at Hexham. Buddy had a mid air collison with the eventual winner and was lucky to finish the race never mind be 2nd. Kilmore Rock finally got Ron over the line after his disappointing time with Ask My Heather who we retired.
Sheila with new Owner Andy and Mike completed the new partnership. Kilmoe will also now have time out – just for a few weeks along with Sunset Hill. Sunset Hill was 6th in a very hot bumper – not bad for a 3 mile chaser in the making! Still 25% available in this exciting new mare.
Good to see lewis Duffy back on a break from Australia where he goes back to a Stallion man job for Godophin – having started his life here at Girsonfield - a few times lol. His brother Josh is head lad – both from Otterburn.
Most horses are turned out for the summer now including Clear Angel who did not do so well at Newcastle – he will have his day when the ground goes soft again.
We kick off 29th July with the whole yard back in work then. Foals came in for a big day of foot trimming and Vaccinations – they were delighted! New staff are starting over the next few weeks so we are all ready to go from 29th July. We also have a few new horses arriving from Ireland – and indeed have arrived – long stories !!
OPEN DAY 4th August 2.00pm – could you please RSVP if you are able to come? Just email please. We will welcome our Owners with a parade of horses for next season followed by tea and our Charity Auction and Raffle!

Susan Corbett Racing Syndicates and Shares for Sale for the 2024/25 season
The Goodfellow Partnership
This is a small partnership of 7 people looking for another member. They have had 6 wins with Wor Verge, who has now retired, placed horse Charizard who we sadly lost and now ‘Beyond The Verge’. ‘Rolo’ is a lovely moving horse that will be back in training in July and will first run in a bumper before going over hurdles and fences.
Shares £1000.00 per 10% to buy in then £200.00 per month fully inclusive. 10% available.
New Small Partnership – Ladies that Race!
We already have ‘Joker’ who is a strong 4 year old bred by my Irish friend Rose. He is out of one of our winning mares Toarmandowithlove by Cloudings.
Rose has leased him to us, so no buy in apart from £100.00 setting up the partnership costs - then £ 100.00 per month for a 5% share, £200.00 for 10% etc.
This syndicate starts on 1st August as he has just been broken in to the point of doing steady work on the gallop and is now on a break until 1st August.
Bought from the Goffs May sale – she has had 2 PTP runs and was 9 lengths behind a horse that fetched 37K at the sales. Her full brother went for 33k after winning his PTP. Related to Shantou Bob, Uncle Danny and Mah Mate Bob.
She is a big mare who has taken time to mature. She ran in a red hot bumper at Hexham in June and was a very credible 6th. She is on a break and will be back in training at the end of July.
10% £1000.00 to buy in Plus Vat – includes expenses such as sales price and sales commission from Goffs – on going fully inclusive costs are £200.00 per month
25% £2500 + vat to buy in £5000.00 per month fully Inclusive cost.
New Racing Club
Won a Point in 2021 and sold for 47K then placed 2nd over 2 miles in a maiden Hurdle before an injury. She has since been placed 3rd in a H/c Hurdle. Rated 104 and should go Chasing.
Previously trained by Gordon Elliot. She is having a summer break and will be in training at the end of July.
5% will be £100.00 per month
10% will be £200.00 per month etc.
He has ran in 6 Point to Points in Ireland, being placed 5th, 2nd, 4th x 3 times before winning in March. He is one of the biggest horses you will see in Training at 17.3hh currently on a break till 1st August.
Very well related with his Dam being a Listed placed mare and his sibling Different Gravey being rated 160 in his prime and also a Listed horse. This is a very exciting NH prospect.
For sale to stay on the yard. Owners asking 10K.
This is a filly from the same stud as our Pinot Rouge. She comes at the end of June - unbroken. The dam Dolly Hall was Bred by JP McManus wife Noreen.
She won a PTP, placed in all 4 Bumpers and 2 x Hurdle wins and placed 7 times and was rated 116. Ice Breaker won nearly 500K and rated 117 in France he won over a distance of 1.4 – 1.7. She will be to break in and train on or may need a break – time will tell but a lovely mover and prospect.
£5K plus Vat and an extra 2K to the breeder when she wins a race!
This gelding has recently come from Ireland and is work in progress. Not too big, but very strong and doing well on the gallops. He is from a family of Point to Point winners and related to Princess Rapunzel. He could well be a good prospect for a small syndicate. He should be ready to race in 6 – 8 weeks.
Price 5k no vat
Please contact Susan on 07713651215 or email girsonfield@outlook.com to get more information/ pedigrees etc.
Breeding Syndicates at Girsonfield
Breeding plan – Bahrikate
Plan would be to put her in foal every two years and the year between the funds would keep the youngstock…
Based on 4 people sharing…. Ie a 25% share each.
Year 1 - 4k to buy into Mare and Foal for 2024
Year 2 4 K to pay keep and stud fee to put mare in foal and to keep yearling.
Year 3 4 K to keep mare. Foal and two year old.
Year 4 – revise if we are selling a youngster or keeping going in the same vein as the idea would be to rear and race our own.
