My horse was involved in a dead heat today. What is the outcome of my bet - price obtained on the horse was 11/4.
Answer:
A bookmakers normal reaction to a dead heat is to halve the punter's stake and the full odds paid out on the reduced stake.
For example if the bet was a £20 win single at odds of 11/4 the payout would be £10 at 11/4 = £27.50
With 3 runners in the dead heat the stake would be divided by 3
The same principal applies to each way bets unless the number of places is affected by the dead heat.
For example if three horses dead-heat for fourth place (in a 16 runner handicap) and the bet is a £15 each-way single, the return is one third of the stake (£5) at the full place odds.
