Newsletter - Susan Corbett's Newsletter March 09, 2025 |
Hi Susan Corbett's Newsletter: It was an amazing run yesterday from Sunset Hill – she finished 3rd but that was not even half the story... Nathan gave her a smack after the 3rd last and dislocated his shoulder. He was in terrible pain and could not push or steer the horse. She finished 3rd on her own efforts which was amazing - jumping two hurdles. Nathan refused to go with the drs until he weighed in or we would have lost the prize money. Nathan is made of tough stuff – the xray later was good and we hope he will not be out for long but if he wants to continue his career head BHA Dr Hill will probably insist he has an op over the summer as Sam Coltherd did a few years ago. Gloria on only her 2nd run for the GRClub came in the prize money to be 5th wanting better ground (suited Sunny not her). What a little mare - tough as boots she tried her best in soft ground so we look forward to the summer ground for her. Ayr racecourse did us proud with the best staff accommodation around, great food and some of our Owners stayed overnight and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Its 3.5 hours so not even a bad drive there. I was speaking to Jonjo O Neil senior ( yes name dropping ) he loves Ayr – straightforward, flat, well looked after, course for the horses and a great Owner experience. At the beginning of the week we were invited to the local Middle school to take part in a mini careers fair with groups of 12/13 year olds asking questions about various careers – so recruitment for Sunday Stables was on! We already have our own James Corbett, Josh Duffy, Bekah Duffy and Lewis Duffy ( stallion man in Autralia ) all working with horses and went to that school. There was the Fire Service, Forestry Commission, our vets, NFU, Accountants and a science table great idea to get the children thinking.... Otherwise we would love some rain next week for Pinot but the race its self looks weak – it's a call to decide whether to wait and wait for soft ground or take the chance when the horses are ready and well. Race plans 13th Hexham – Kilmore Rock in the Conditional race over 2.7 with Conor Rabbitt claiming 5lb 14th Doncaster Freddie Steady Go ( home bred ) – in his maybe first bumper and Pinot in the 3 mile with Claimer Jack Power taking 7lbs off her back. 15th Newcastle maybe Freddie in the bumper – wanting some give in the ground. Then we start to gear up for the finals on the 21 – 23rd March...
