Newsletter - Susan Corbett's Newsletter January 05, 2025 |
Hi Susan Corbett's Newsletter Happy New Year! We had a great start with Sunset Hill being 2nd at Southall on New Years Day. Beaten 4 lengths in a 2.4 and we are sure she will need further. She has already earned double her cost price since we bought her in the Summer for Ian, Jason, Andy and Mike. It starts to get really exciting now as both her and Pinot are heading for fairly big races at Doncaster later in the month. Pinot went back over hurdles and was back to loving her racing – like Champ she found the chase fences just a bit too much effort. She ran a great race to be 4th for Stuart and Steve. What two great mares they are – be interesting to see what both handicap marks will go to on Tuesday! Staff are fighting the weather – many, many buckets to carry when the water drinkers freeze – Did you know horses drink at least 8 gallons a day? Jamie has come in on his day off to help the Sunday staff muck out, while Josh and his partner Laura ( she works for Stuart Coltherd ) were in early doors - without being asked - to feed the 44 horses and 2 ponies we currently have inside! Its all about the team work and the care of the horses! Amanda continues to make a recovery and is determined to be back soon ( we are not so sure ). Bekah has come from Jackie Steven and has fitted in very well as a competent member of staff and maybe future Am/ Condtional Jockey. Caitlin came from Phil Kirbys and is about to start her NVQ3, while newest member Abi, age 17 has come from being laid off at Rebeccas (Menzies) yard. It was Rebeccas request that we take her on. Jockeys riding out are Nathan, Ben Smith, Tash Cookson and Conor Rabbit. What a team only matched by the excellent team of horses we have here. Disappointing that Musselburgh was called off so late – we had already decided if it took them that long to decide, the ground must be rubbish, so we did not set off with Beyond The Verge! Three horses I was sure would be first three at Newcastle and it was called off. Still the snow will go and we have the horses ready to win when it does. We have horses back in work now for the Flat season ahead so we currently have 27 horses in training with 3 youngsters to break and join the rest in the Spring/Summer. Wee Alki we may send to the sales along with Infinite Honour or keep him and start a new syndicate – he will run in his first handicap on the 16th January – ground permitting at Newcastle. Anyone interested in joining his syndicate please get in touch… Dates 9th Catterick – Atomic Angel and Champ Royal 11th Wetherby - See a Stride 16th Newcastle Les Legacy, Wee Alki, Beyond The Verge, and maybe more…. 21st Ayr Champ Royal - maybe 23rd Wetherby Atomic Angel maybe 24th Doncaster – Velasco / Atomic Angel – Samwise 25th Doncaster Pinot Rouge – Yorkshire Rose Sunset Hill Rover Don 3 mile Novice. 28th Newcastle Kilmore Rock and Rock Steady Eddie Round up this Jumps season ( from May ) 8 wins, 20 prizes from 56 runners and 70K Flat 2024 2 wins 10 prizes from 30 runners and 20K Total 90K so far…..
