MAITRE EN SCIENCE 1.42 Musselburgh 9/4 – MAITRE EN SCIENCE brings standout form from France, with his latest success at Clairefontaine in September proving particularly strong. The form of that race has worked out well, and he looks well-placed to make a winning start for Harry Derham.

ETALON 2.00 Sandown 2/1 – ETALON made excellent progress as a novice and looks to have been brought along steadily this season. Now just 4 lb higher than when impressively winning over C&D a year ago, he has every chance of getting back to winning ways.

NO NO TANGO 2.08 Wetherby 11/4 – NO NO TANGO was unlucky to fall mid-race at Haydock two weeks ago but had previously looked highly promising when scoring on debut for Harry Derham at Wincanton. If he gets back into that rhythm, he should have every chance of bouncing back.

BOOMSLANG 3.57 Musselburgh 13/8 – BOOMSLANG took another step forward when winning here to kick off the year, proving well in command from three out. With further improvement likely, he looks capable of adding another victory to his tally.

BALLARAT BERTIE 5:40 Wolverhampton 7/1 each way – BALLARAT BERTIE looks by far the most interesting in this field for several reasons. Richard Hughes has an excellent record with his all-weather 3yo debutantes, and this fella got well backed before being declared a non-runner on his handicap debut, with a weird reason of ‘owner unable to attend’, which is the first time I’ve ever seen such a ludicrous excuse (maybe it’s because a very high percentage of the money on him that day was theirs and they didn’t want to miss the horse winning).

He was again backed LTO but ran no sort of race, as he pretty much got outpaced in rear for the whole 6f. I’m sure he’s better that that, as not only does he look the part, he’s quite well-bred and should improve over further. He’s been gelded since that last run in October which has to be a plus, and stepping up to a mile and a bit for the first time, I’m hoping he sees plenty of money again and this time shows us the reason why he’s clearly well-regarded.
